Chapter 57 – Nowhere to Run

Shao Cixin saw that Wen Zhihan already had an idea, so she stopped worrying about it.

She nodded, then lifted her spoon and continued to enjoy her breakfast.

Afterward, Shao Cixin rested and exercised. Finally, she found herself standing in front of the window in a daze.

She was thinking about the production of Post-Marriage Love Diary.

As long as the camera was turned on, she would have to sidle up to Wen Zhihan and show her favor for her, just like a lover would.

If it were in the past, she could openly disguise herself and deceive everyone.

But now…

She tightened her grip on the glass of water in her hand and took a deep breath.

She didn’t know if it was her imagination or not, but she felt that everything leading up to this point seemed to be pushing her toward Wen Zhihan, step by step.

It was like even the heavens wanted her to like Wen Zhihan.

But she didn’t want to.

And she couldn’t.

She had already felt the pain of loving someone with no happy ending, so why should she go through it again?

Shao Cixin began to regret accepting this variety show.

She stood alone in front of the window in silence for a while.

Then she mustered up her courage and pumped her fist to encourage herself.

Shao Cixin, you cannot give up easily!

To be an actor, you need to act, so just act!

As long as she said she didn’t like Wen Zhihan, then it meant that she didn’t like her! No one could force her!

Yes, that was the truth!

Wen Zhihan stood nearby without saying a word.

One moment, she saw Shao Cixin hanging her head in despair, the next she saw her encouraging herself by pumping her first.

She felt inexplicably confused.

…What was going on here?

“Cixin,” she called out.

“Ah?” Shao Cixin was startled. She quickly turned around in the direction of the sound.

“Is there something on your mind?”

“No! There’s nothing.”

“Really?”

“Really, really.”

Shao Cixin pretended to be calm and forced herself to look away from Wen Zhihan. She rubbed the cup in her hands.

These days, she was becoming more and more afraid of encountering Wen Zhihan’s goodwill.

But the next second, she saw Wen Zhihan walking towards her.

Wen Zhihan took Shao Cixin’s hand, her eyes as gentle as water.

“Cixin, we are friends, and I am willing to share your troubles. So if anything makes you unhappy, don’t hide it from me, okay?”

Best friends could talk about anything with each other, and they were irreplaceable in each other’s hearts.

If Wen Zhihan couldn’t be Shao Cixin’s real wife, then she wanted to be her closest friend.

They were friends… Shao Cixin sighed silently in her heart at this sentence.

Logic told her that this sentence was correct, but a selfish part of her didn’t want to hear it.

She felt guilty concealing her true feelings from Wen Zhihan.

She hadn’t lived up to their agreement of “no secrets between friends.”

She didn’t even dare to tell Wen Zhihan why she doesn’t drive…

But when she heard Wen Zhihan say that she was willing to bear her pain, the emotion lingering in Shao Cixin’s heart was still more joy than sorrow.

No matter what their identity to each other was, she still wanted to cherish Wen Zhihan.

Shao Cixin replied with a bright smile, “En. From now on, no matter if I’m happy or not, I’ll share it with you first, okay?”

Setting aside the possibility of becoming her lover, she still wanted to be friends with Wen Zhihan for life.

She couldn’t give up on such a good person.

And if there ever came a day when she was ready, she might be willing to muster up the courage to tell Wen Zhihan everything that she had experienced in her past life…

“Okay.” Wen Zhihan pressed a kiss between Shao Cixin’s eyebrows. “I’ll do the same.”

She was trying to show Shao Cixin that she meant something more to her and that she was different from other people.

—My dear Cixin, you will always be a special and dazzling presence in my heart.

The kiss was gentle and pure.

Shao Cixin could feel how much Wen Zhihan cherished her, and how Wen Zhihan wanted to give her the courage to confide in her about anything and everything.

They were friends.

Friends that were different, special, and more important to each other than anyone else.

It was the second time they were filming Post-Marriage Love Diary.

They woke up in a familiar setting.

Unlike in the first episode, Wen Zhihan did not get up to deal with work but stayed in bed to accompany Shao Cixin.

In the scene, she was carefully helping her still-sleeping lover cover up.

The room was quiet, and the warm atmosphere was hidden in the rustling of the sheets.

Then Shao Cixin woke up.

She moved her body first and stretched out her legs. Then she opened her eyes slightly and looked up.

When she realized the short distance between her and Wen Zhihan, her brain didn’t catch up to her senses and she turned over in a daze to get away.

How could she get so close again…

How was she so dishonest in her sleep…

Then she paused as realization struck her.

She quickly reacted, stretching out to cover herself. Then she turned back and crawled into Wen Zhihan’s arms. She wrapped her hands tightly around Wen Zhihan’s waist as if nothing had happened.

“Good morning…”

Feeling that her actions weren’t enough, she called out softly, “Wife.”

Wen Zhihan smiled and kissed her forehead.

The little sweetheart who was only available for this variety show was truly very sweet.

“Good morning, wife.” Her response was soft and gentle.

Shao Cixin’s eyes widened halfway.

Wen Zhihan’s voice was still hoarse after waking up. It was gentle and lazy and very pleasant to the ear, as if a feather was tickling the tip of someone’s heart.

Especially when she said “wife”…

Shao Cixin silently squirmed and ducked her head under the covers. She wanted to enjoy the title, but she felt too ashamed.

—It was too evil. When would this woman, Wen Zhihan, stop being so charming!

“What are we eating later…?”

Shao Cixin buried herself in Wen Zhihan’s arms as she spoke. Her muffled voice made her sound especially provocative.

“What are we doing today…?”

Wen Zhihan held Shao Cixin in her arms, enjoying the warmth of their private moment together.

She stroked Shao Cixin’s long hair and responded gently, “Didn’t you say you wanted to eat soup dumplings? We’ll go out to eat later.

“After eating, we’ll go shopping, and I’ll buy you some new clothes and jewelry.”

Shao Cixin raised her head in confusion. “Huh? Why are you buying me new clothes and jewelry?”

Wen Zhihan held her face and kissed her. “Isn’t my Cixin most fond of beautiful things?”

Shao Cixin understood clearly and nodded. Then she buried her head back in Wen Zhihan’s shoulder.

She actually liked being in Wen Zhihan’s arms.

Who wouldn’t feel the same way about such a fragrant, soft, and gentle jiejie?

Since there was the pretense of acting for the variety show, Shao Cixin shamefully allowed herself to sink into Wen Zhihan’s warmth for another day—just one more day.

“Afterward, we’ll go watch a movie.”

“Okay…”

“We’ll eat out for both lunch and dinner. After dinner, let’s take a walk in Lansha Park. I have a small gift for you.”

As soon as Shao Cixin heard that there was a gift, she immediately became excited.

A gift?

Wen Zhihan prepared a gift for her?

She raised her head and asked with bright eyes, “What gift?”

When Wen Zhihan saw Shao Cixin’s expression, she couldn’t help but find Shao Cixin adorable.

She kissed the corner of her lips and said softly, “Don’t be impatient. You’ll find out tonight.”

Shao Cixin raised her eyebrows.

Then she reached out and pulled the blanket over the two of them at the same time as she buried her head back in Wen Zhihan’s chest.

She shut her eyes again.

“?”

Wen Zhihan was puzzled. “Do you still want to sleep?”

“Mm.” Shao Cixin moved and shifted on Wen Zhihan’s body until she found a comfortable position to rest. “I’ll sleep until night comes so that, when I open my eyes, I can see the present you got me straight away.”

Wen Zhihan was amused by Shao Cixin’s resourcefulness.

She had quite a way of finding unique solutions.

But even so…

“Get up. We’re going out to eat dumplings.”

Because of the anticipation, Shao Cixin was very energetic the whole day. With every second that passed, she was looking forward to their evening walk.

After breakfast, she leisurely went down to entertain their neighbors’ cats and dogs.

One second she would be saying “hello” to a cat in one house, then the next second she would be playing fetch with the dogs in another. It was as if all the cats and dogs in their entire community were very familiar with her.

To the cameras, she looked like a cross-species social butterfly.

Wen Zhihan walked behind Shao Cixin and tenderly gazed at her back.

Suddenly, she felt like she had been transported back in time to their high school years.

During one class break, she was walking behind Shao Cixin just like this, maintaining a short distance between them.

She hugged a book as she watched Shao Cixin, who was smiling like a flower, tightly holding onto the arm of the person next to her.

She and Shao Cixin never had such an intimate moment between them.

—They weren’t even friends.

But then Shao Cixin noticed her. She stopped talking to her companion and turned her head in the direction of Wen Zhihan.

Their eyes silently locked onto each other in the noisy environment.

It only lasted a few seconds.

But even though it only lasted a few seconds, time seemed to stretch and slow down. To Wen Zhihan, those few seconds felt like a lifetime.

Then she saw Shao Cixin curve her beautiful eyes and gift her with a smile as bright as the sun.

It was a smile that was etched into her memory forever.

But after a short and neutral greeting, Shao Cixin’s gaze returned to its original setting, and she walked away arm-in-arm with her companion.

The distance between them grew wider and wider.

Afterward, Shao Cixin was like mottled light and shadow, gradually fading from her life.

When her thoughts returned to the present, Wen Zhihan watched as Shao Cixin bent over to greet their neighbors’ dogs.

Her eyes were still as beautiful as they were back then, her smile just as bright as the sun.

But fortunately, their relationship was different now.

“Cixin.”

Hearing Wen Zhihan’s voice, Shao Cixin turned her head in response. When she saw that Wen Zhihan had stretched out her hand to her, she unconsciously walked over and sealed their fingers together.

Suddenly feeling very grateful, Wen Zhihan pulled Shao Cixin into her arms.

Fortunately, she had the right to embrace her.

Fortunately, she wouldn’t look away from her this time.

Fortunately, in these long years, they still have the opportunity to meet again.

Sensing that something was off about Wen Zhihan’s mood, Shao Cixin gently hugged her back and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Wen Zhihan said softly, “It’s nothing. I just wanted to hug my beautiful Mrs. Wen.”

As soon as Shao Cixin heard this, she happily welcomed Wen Zhihan’s embrace. “Hug me, hug me. Whenever you want to, I’m all yours.”

Wen Zhihan held her tightly with a forlorn smile.

How great would it be if this sentence was true…

Night fell in the blink of an eye.

Because she was accompanied by Wen Zhihan, Shao Cixin had a joyful day out and almost never touched her phone.

They bought beautiful clothes and jewelry, watched a good movie, and experienced a very fulfilling time together.

The camera recorded them with their sincere smiles and overflowing happiness—a happiness that couldn’t be faked.

Wen Zhihan had become accustomed to the presence of the cameras and even became a little happy for their presence.

Because of the cameras, everything they experienced together today would be recorded, and they could play it back at any time in the future.

Regardless of whether they did good or bad, they could see it with the press of a button.

Soon, it was time for their walk after dinner.

In Lansha Park, Shao Cixin was on her best behavior and kept her fingers intertwined with Wen Zhihan.

They took a leisurely walk around the park’s forest trail.

The evening breeze blew gently through the fresh air, and the busy pace of life seemed to come to a slow stop.

Shao Cixin took a deep breath of the pure night air and said from the bottom of her heart, “Zhihan, with you accompanying me by my side, I had a really great day.”

Wen Zhihan said softly, “That’s good.”

Shao Cixin asked, “Is this the gift you wanted to give me?”

Wen Zhihan shook her head. “No.”

Shao Cixin was pleasantly surprised. “There’s more?”

Wen Zhihan smiled and tightened her grip on Shao Cixin’s hand. “Follow me.”

Shao Cixin obediently imitated Wen Zhihan’s footsteps in confusion.

They came to two trees.

These two big and sturdy trees stretched out their rich and abundant branches in all directions. Their intertwined limbs covered the sky and the moon with lush leaves and vegetation.

Shao Cixin followed the direction of Wen Zhihan’s pointed finger and discovered a small space between the two trees.

It was like a small window cut by branches and leaves, just enough to peek into the deep black night sky.

“Cixin,” Wen Zhihan suddenly said, “Do you want to make a wish on a shooting star?”

Shao Cixin immediately responded, “I do.”

Shooting stars were so beautiful, so of course she would enjoy making a wish on one.

When she processed Wen Zhihan’s question, Shao Cixin’s thoughts suddenly shifted and she said in surprise, “Will there be shooting stars tonight?!”

“There will be.”

Wen Zhihan gazed at her, her eyes immeasurably gentle.

“A very small one, belonging to you alone.”

After these words fell from her lips, Wen Zhihan raised her black phone and placed it in the empty space left between the two trees.

It was strange. The hole had four corners like a square, and it wasn’t too big or too small, almost exactly the size of a person’s phone.

Wen Zhihan’s phone screen was pitch black, with no sound.

The surroundings were so quiet that Shao Cixin could only hear the sound of the wind.

Then a shooting star appeared on the black screen.

Shao Cixin was stunned—she couldn’t take her eyes away.

The shooting star appeared from the upper right corner of the screen and passed quickly. At first glance, it looked like a real meteor had shot through the sky.

Shao Cixin obviously knew she was watching a video, but because the corners of the frame fit so perfectly into the empty space left between the trees, she couldn’t help but regard the meteor as if it were real.

It was truly marvelous, like a perfect performance.

This shooting star might have appeared on the phone, but it was also a miracle in the distant sky.

“Happy birthday, my beautiful Mrs. Wen.”

A gentle voice passed through her ears, and Shao Cixin finally remembered what she had forgotten.

May 6th, her birthday.

It turned out that everything Wen Zhihan had orchestrated today was for her birthday…

She stared at the phone screen blankly.

Brilliant shooting stars crossed their narrow stage one after another, like endless drizzling streams of light that silently fell into Wen Zhihan’s palm, where they turned into gifts personally hand-delivered to Shao Cixin.

It was a wonderful and unprecedented gift.

“You can make a wish,” Wen Zhihan said softly. “These shooting stars can also make your wish come true.

“Any wish.”

Shao Cixin slowly turned her gaze to the “shooting stars.”

She suddenly didn’t know what to say, but she had so many questions she wanted to ask.

“The gap in this tree…Did you make it?”

“No, it’s naturally formed. My friend found it.”

“Then this shooting star…”

“I came up with it myself. Do you like it?”

“I do…”

After she finished speaking, Shao Cixin saw Wen Zhihan slowly curve her blue eyes.

She heard Wen Zhihan say with relief, “I’m very happy that you like it.”

Shao Cixin was left speechless. She stared at Wen Zhihan blankly, forgetting to look away.

Under the gaze of the cameras, their two pairs of eyes intertwine.

The night breeze blew past slowly, lifting Shao Cixin’s long black hair. Her and Wen Zhihan’s different fragrances met in the air and blended in a flurry.

Under the vast sky, Shao Cixin heard a sound.

It was a sound that even the turbulent wind couldn’t cover up, that even a red dust tornado couldn’t swallow—her own heartbeat.

It was hot and vigorous, a sound completely controlled by Wen Zhihan’s presence.

Shao Cixin finally admitted defeat.

She had nowhere to run. She had long liked Wen Zhihan.
