Is it just me who loves the smell of a good comic or graphic novel? These days, I mostly read on my Kindle (convenience and shelf space play a part), but I try to get any stories containing art in physical form if I can. So worth it!
The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a witty, heartfelt romance featuring a crossdressing count and an activist princess. I love the ambiguous fantasy setting here—I think it would only work in the whimsy of the graphic novel form.
Like the setting, the story never takes itself too seriously. I enjoyed how the narrative doesn’t hesitate to tackle heavier themes of women’s rights and institutional barriers, but with the same humor and light-hearted tone as really good cartoon shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Set off by their big fat crushes on one another, Count Camembert and Princess Brie tumble through friendship, love, angst, and all sorts of other fun and complicated emotions that young adults inflict upon each other.
These are the plot points that get centered, along with all the shenanigans the pair get themselves into as Count Camembert desperately tries to maintain her cover and Princess Brie (hilariously) attempts to court “him.”
All of this to say, if you’re looking for something a little on the light side, and a silly romance story about some characters named after fancy cheese seems like a fun snack, then The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a great place to end up.
